About
Junsei — meaning 'pure' in Japanese — is the debut restaurant of chef-owners Aman Lakhiani and Zach Farr, who opened this Marylebone yakitori counter in 2021. The kitchen grills every part of the chicken over white-hot binchotan charcoal, honouring a strict zero-waste philosophy. Farr trained at the critically acclaimed New York yakitori restaurant Torishin, bringing genuine technique to the open counter. Diners can choose from à la carte skewers, sharing plates or an omakase tasting menu that showcases seasonal produce alongside the signature donabe rice. The intimate room — complete with vinyl records spinning behind the bar — conjures the atmosphere of a Tokyo neighbourhood izakaya.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- One of London's few dedicated yakitori counters, grilling every cut over binchotan charcoal for authentic smoky depth.
- The omakase tasting menu takes guests through the entire chicken — from crispy kawa skin to melt-in-the-mouth heart — with theatrical counter seating.
- The 40-minute slow-cooked donabe rice, finished with dashi and topped with chicken or crab, is a cult signature dish worth building a meal around.
- A thoughtfully curated sake and cocktail list complements the food, with vinyl records spinning for an atmosphere that channels a Shinjuku backstreet bar.
