About
Zaibatsu has been one of south-east London's most beloved Japanese restaurants since its founding in 2003, and its forced closure after a landlord dispute in 2023 prompted an outpouring of grief from its loyal regulars. The restaurant triumphantly reopened in October 2025 at a new Woolwich Road address, bringing its unassuming, family-run warmth and Michelin-worthy presentation to a new home. The menu blends Japanese flavours with pan-Asian influence — fresh sushi, thoughtfully prepared small plates and a BYOB policy that keeps the experience relaxed and accessible. Booking in advance is essential as it fills quickly.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- A genuine cult restaurant reborn — Zaibatsu's return in October 2025 was greeted with the enthusiasm of a cultural event in south-east London.
- The kitchen achieves presentation and flavour complexity that rivals restaurants many times the price, in a cosy, family atmosphere.
- A BYOB policy makes an already excellent-value meal even more affordable and laid-back.
- Over 20 years of history in Greenwich, with the same family running a restaurant that has survived and thrived through every adversity.
