About
Kimura has occupied 31 St. Marks Place since 1985, making it one of the oldest continuously operating Japanese restaurants in the East Village. The restaurant's specialty is Hakata-style motsunabe — a Fukuoka-origin pork intestine hotpot cooked at the table in a rich miso or shoyu broth, enriched with cabbage, chives, and garlic. This style of communal hotpot cooking is deeply rooted in northern Kyushu tradition and remains genuinely rare in New York. Kimura also offers sukiyaki, collagen nabe, and a selection of grilled beef tongue and Japanese teishoku set meals. The sake list is extensive, and the restaurant draws a loyal crowd of Japanese expats and dedicated regulars who value authenticity over trend. The St. Marks cluster location places it at the heart of the East Village's historic Japanese dining corridor.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
  • Kimura serves one of the only authentic Hakata-style motsunabe (Fukuoka pork intestine hotpot) in New York — a regional Japanese comfort food nearly impossible to find outside Japan.
  • Operating continuously since 1985, Kimura carries four decades of institutional knowledge and is a living archive of authentic Japanese hotpot tradition in New York.
  • The sukiyaki and collagen nabe are equally outstanding — richly flavored, communal, and warming in a way that no number of ramen spots can replicate.
  • An extensive sake selection curated to pair with nabe-style cooking makes Kimura one of the East Village's best sake dining destinations.

One of the oldest Japanese restaurants in the East Village, operating since 1985. Located on the historic St. Marks dining corridor.
