About
Sushi Ryusei is a fully Japanese-owned and operated sushi restaurant on East 39th Street in Murray Hill, opened by chef-owner Masato Oyama from Yokohama, who brings over 30 years of experience and his tenure as head chef at both Sushi of Gari Columbus and Sushi of Gari Tribeca. The compact space features both a sushi counter for omakase dining and standard tables for à la carte service with teriyaki, tempura, soba, and maki. The omakase counter was selected as one of Michelin-starred chef Shaun Hergatt's favorite restaurants — a strong endorsement of its quality. Crispy rice spicy tuna and miso cod are guest favorites from the à la carte menu.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
  • Chef-owner Masato Oyama's 30+ years of experience, including as head chef at Sushi of Gari, bring exceptional Tokyo-style sushi precision to a neighborhood setting.
  • One of the rare Murray Hill spots where authentic omakase and traditional à la carte coexist in the same kitchen.
  • Endorsed as a personal favorite by Michelin-starred chef Shaun Hergatt — a notable mark of culinary credibility.
  • Weekday lunch service makes it a strong option for midtown business dining, offering quality far above most nearby competitors.

Book counter seats via OpenTable for omakase; standard reservations for à la carte tables. Two phone lines: (212) 983-8880 and (212) 983-0525.
