About
Takahachi East Village has been a cornerstone of the neighborhood's dining scene since it was founded by Japanese restaurateur Hiroyuki Takahashi in the early 1990s. When Takahashi retired in 2019 after nearly two decades, chef Jack Hlaing — who had spent 19 years working under Takahashi — purchased the restaurant and pledged to maintain its Japanese culinary tradition and identity. The menu spans classic nigiri and sashimi, traditional maki rolls, and Japanese home-cooking plates, all at prices that have remained accessible relative to the neighborhood's rising costs. An early-bird special adds further value for weeknight diners.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- Over 30 years in the same East Village location — a track record of quality and consistency that few NYC restaurants of any cuisine can match.
- The Japanese culinary DNA established by founder Hiroyuki Takahashi is preserved by current owner Jack Hlaing, who trained under Takahashi for 19 years.
- An early-bird special (from 16:30 to 19:00) offers substantial value for weeknight diners seeking quality sushi without the full à la carte price.
- The kitchen covers both traditional sushi counter items and Japanese home-cooking plates, making it suitable for sushi purists and more casual diners alike.
Founded by Hiroyuki Takahashi; sold to long-time chef Jack Hlaing in 2019. Japanese culinary tradition maintained.
