About
Kicsi Japán (meaning 'Little Japan' in Hungarian) was opened in May 2019 by Osaka-born chef Yoshihito Hirose, who trained for a decade at an Osaka sushi restaurant and deepened his kaiseki skills in Hiroshima before making Budapest his home. JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) featured Hirose-san in a supporter-store interview, formally recognising his restaurant as an authentic Japanese culinary outpost abroad. In 2026, Kicsi Japán was selected as a partner for Japan's official Sake Week in Budapest, an event co-endorsed by Japan's Ambassador and Embassy – an extraordinary honour for an independent sushi shop. The menu is focused and precise: Edomae nigiri, sashimi selections, kaisendon (seafood rice bowls), and salmon-avocado bowls, all prepared with meticulous attention to fish quality and rice technique. A second branch has since opened in District V, broadening access to Hirose-san's craft.
Why it's on Washoku Guide
- Osaka-born chef Yoshihito Hirose is the sole owner and chef – the clearest possible example of Japanese-owned and Japanese-led.
- JETRO officially features Kicsi Japán as an authentic Japanese restaurant abroad – a rare institutional validation.
- Official Japan Embassy Sake Week 2026 partner – recognised by Japanese diplomatic channels as a genuine cultural ambassador.
- Perfect 5.0 TripAdvisor rating and praise from Japanese-trained food critics confirm the kitchen's uncompromising standards.
